Hard to keep quiet

It is very hard to read the posts on the forums and not put in some sort of reply. People are complaining the GPG is dumbing down SupCom 2 because of the changed economy and various other reasons that I honestly don't know where they are getting their info from.

One of the guys I share an office with has a standing daily game that he plays with our balance designer. In watching them play I can honestly say this game is shaping up to be more fun than Forged Alliance. It is faster paced, with the action being centered around combat, not some intricate economy system. The entire games pace and feel are being changed daily based on playtime feedback, so anything you saw at GamesCom or PAX has completely changed now.

So, when you read the doomsayers' posts about how this game is going to suck because of the "dumbed down" economy or because it is not going to have [insert feature here] just remember, there are probably quite a few things going into the game that has not been announced yet. It is what is going into the game that is going to make it succeed, not what isn't going in.

So true, I'm glad to hear that from someone on the inside :P

The general negativity bothers me too. I hope it's not scaring off new community members.

I'm a HUGE fan of TA and of Supcom/FA, yet I for one think this new economic system is a very smart move and will only ADD to the strategic depth of the game. These so-called 'purists' are just whiners who think they know what's best for everyone else. I also don't see why a game cannot be both commercially successful AND deep and rewarding: they are certainly NOT mutually exclusive!

Great post.

They're not purists. I already invented a term for them. SupComservatives.

The more I think about it, with the way the rate based economy works in FA the economy changes in SupCom 2 should make the game play exactly the same, because of the way units take longer to build when you don't have resources (assuming it's a linear decrease in build power/mass).

Is this true?

Very nice post Sorian. IMO the economy for SupCom 2 sounds great.

Sorian said... / September 27, 2009 at 10:45 AM

So far, building seems faster, especially after you get some of the research bonuses.

Adamius said... / September 27, 2009 at 2:32 PM

what about the people who really like forged alliance gameplay and just want the new technical features promised in scII like new path finding etc?

will there be a forged alliance mode?

Andreas said... / September 27, 2009 at 6:09 PM

If there won't be an official FA mode then the community will probably create one I guess.

Smoot said... / September 27, 2009 at 8:44 PM

Andreas: That's the most likely outcome.

@ Matti

"Supcomservatives". Ha! Brilliant! :)

DGo said... / September 28, 2009 at 6:19 AM

Good news. Can't wait.

Fingolfin said... / September 29, 2009 at 9:40 AM

Sorian, how much do you know about the new grouping system Chris Taylor briefly mentioned?

Peter said... / September 29, 2009 at 12:47 PM

I totally agree,

there were so many complaints about SupCom2 and what people saw was just pre-alpha.
I totally have faith in you guys at GPG and I always enjoy reading your blog.
I guess SupCom2 will be great and thx for your very interesting posts.

I like this blog a lot

I want MOAAR updates!

Although I know you can't do this because it takes prob. a lot of time.

zeech said... / September 30, 2009 at 10:31 AM

Why keep quiet? Why not just post? Have your bosses given you any restrictions on what you can and cant say, or what kind of posts you can make on the forums?

Peter said... / September 30, 2009 at 11:42 AM

He already mentioned somewhere that he is free to say what he wants.
I guess that was somewhere in the GPG forum.

Sorian said... / September 30, 2009 at 12:16 PM

I can say whatever opinion I would like, but I am still bound by a NDA. I can't say anything that is not already officially announced by GPG/SE withour permission.

Matti said... / September 30, 2009 at 12:20 PM

In that case... Can you give us crapload of pictures of the units we have already seen? :P

mocafrost said... / September 30, 2009 at 7:35 PM

He's already giving us a lot... more than he has to.

Peter said... / September 30, 2009 at 8:27 PM

Yes Mocafrost,

@Sorian, any update about the naval picture?

By the way, its really interesting what you write in your blog.
Am reading an visualizing how you work and get things done.
Really nice to get a more personal view. :)

I would love to do that work too. Must be awesome to create games like SupCom2. :)

Peter said... / September 30, 2009 at 8:29 PM

Oh one more question,

did GPG and SE made their decision about the match making system yet?
Thats something I really would like to know.

Thx, Ed :)

Sorian said... / September 30, 2009 at 11:01 PM

Yes, the decision on match making has been made.

At the risk of upsetting the echo chamber, I'm not all that excited about the econ changes, I don't think Supcom2 will suck though, I'm just worried it will grow stale faster. I trust your assessment though, and will at least give it a try, thanks for being communicative.
